Dr. Abbey was in the Center for Health
Research and Professor of Epidemeology and Biostatistics at Loma
Linda University. He was on permanent disability before going through
the RHI program. He is now directing AHLMS Headquarters in Jose De
Cabo, Baja, Mexico, an international ministry established within the
School of Public Health at Loma Linda University. Dr. Ede and her
husband went with Dr. Abbey and his wife, Judy, to Baja in January, 1999.
It
is 6 a.m. Christmas morning, December 25. Silver diamonds dot the
black velvet sky. Icicles hang from the bird bath. The sleeping hills
and mountains around Cherry Valley are covered with a light blanket
of fresh show. Despite the cold nights, the days are warms and I take
my clothes off and sun bath around noon each day, in the shelter of
my study with the south sliding door opened.
On
November 22 we -- Judy, Judy’s mother, and I enrolled as
inpatients in Dr. Ede Koenig’s natural remedy program which uses
as its manual the inspired counsel of Ellen G. White plus herbal
preparations and colonies. Judy and I had started the 80% raw foods,
no free oils or fat diet a week before that. We were lifetime
lacto-ovo vegetarians. I have had ankylosing spondylitis for 26
years, being diagnosed in 1972 at UCLA. Since November 22 I have
ceased sulfapyridine powder 1600 mg. daily and used flexeril (muscle
relaxant) and heloion (sleeping medication) only 2 or 3 times per
week with none of these medications taken during the inpatient stay
of the program. My left knee was severely swollen when we first met
Dr. Ede November 13. It had been that way for about 2 weeks. The left
and right knee have accumulated large amounts of fluid and become hot
and inflamed about 8 times over the last 10 years. The AS appears to
be moving into my legs. I am on crutches when these bouts of knee
swelling occur. Natural means mainly ice and hot and cold
fomentations plus rest and elevation of the - knee have successfully
alleviated the condition only twice before. The other times the-knee
has to be aspirated with up to 80 cc of fluid taken off and cortisone
injected I have always tried natural means first. Lately the
cortisone hasn’t worked on the first infection and I have had to
have the procedure done again a week later. My rheumatologist is
recommending a strong immunosuppressant drug such as cyclosporins
because of the severe condition of my AS.
About
1 month before I enrolled in Dr. Ede’s program I discovered
that the synthetic preparation of DHEA dramatically improved my
condition after I had taken it for 3 months at the recommended amount
of 2 tablets per day. However simultaneous with this marked
improvement I experienced severe insomnia with no feeling of fatigue
the next day, the exact reaction I got from oral cortisone. Because
of this I discontinued the DHEA. Upon discontinuing the DHEA my
condition worsened markedly. The same thing happened when I
discontinued oral cortisone.
Two
days ago I began to experience remarked improvement just like I had
with the synthetic DHEA. I have been taking herbal DHEA and herbal
preparations for AS, plus following Dr. Ede’s program closely
with the exception of occasional flexeril and heloion. Also I had to
have my left knee aspirated and injected with cortisone on December 15.
Yesterday,
though still using crutches some, I began to do orchard work again.
The pain got bad towards evening and I discovered it was almost
completely taken away by lying head down on the slant bed for 15
minutes. Then I did more farm chores and the pain got bad again.
Again I did the slant bed for 15 minutes and the pain stopped. While
lying on the slant bed, I could feel my spine shifting and lining up
better. I have severe scoliosis.
Last
night, after a good day of outdoor physical exercise, 1 slept
soundly, a rare experience for me. Even when I woke up to go to the
bathroom, I could go right back to sleep, and even rarer experience
for me.
Although
it is too early to tell for sure, I believe that I am experiencing a
remarkable remission of the AS. I praise God for His goodness and for
leading me to Dr. Ede. I am impressed with the power of prayer and
natural remedies. I am doing many other natural means to control the
disease besides the dietary recommendations -- limiting mental
intense work and stress, being very careful to avoid even slight
chills to the legs or neck, being very careful not to stress joints
or muscles with too much or prolonged physical stress. I find I can
do a lot and my condition is best if I alternate short periods of
rest with exercise. Long periods of immobility’ cause me to
stiffen and have pain. I swim in 85 degree or warmer pools vigorously
at least 3 times per week.
