There are many
differences in pycnogenol products as they are referred to
today. The actual word pycnogenol is really a slang word used
by the discoverer Jacques Masquelier. The technical word is
Proanthocyanidin, which refers to both pine bark and grape seed
extracts. Pine bark extract is considered by most to be the
most beneficial of the Proanthocyanidins. It is water-soluble
and no chemicals are used in its processing. Grape seed extract
uses several chemicals to break down the Proanthocyanidins and then
the chemicals are filtered out to become a pharmaceutical grade Proanthocyanidin
I have been told
that in the chemical processing of the grape seed extract that there
are some 40 ingredients missing that are in the pine bark
extract. This may in itself answer the above question.
The main issue is the manufacturer being honest with the retailer
giving an accurate accounting of the milligrams of either pine bark
or grape seed extract along with the other ingredients needed to
allow for assimilation and binding agents. It is not uncommon
for me to see products describing 30mg, 50mg, or even 100mg tablets
or capsules which is a true statement of total weight but not of pine
bark or grape seed extract. Our pycnogenol is a 250mg tablet
each containing 20mg of pure pycnogenol. All the other
pycnogenol tablets have from 1 to 4mg of pycnogenol.
For the record a
true Proanthocyanidin must have a calcium derivative in order for
assimilation into the human body and a binding agent to bind them
together. We know we have to have 6 to 7 times calcium in
pycnogenol in order for it to absorb and assimilate the pycnogenol in
the body. If you are not adding the calcium to the pycnogenol
you are wasting your money. The Cal Gran in pycnogenol is very
sticky so you have to put a binder inside to prevent the tableting
machine from gumming up. We use a product called
Microcrystalline Cellulose, which is an inert ingredient-binding
agent. It does not assimilate in the body and is passed in the
stool movement. Most companies use the least expensive calcium
such as Dicalcium Phosphate. Dicalcium Phosphate is a
synthetically engineered derivative. This product according to
scientific data can stay in the body for up to two years. For
arthritic patients this could potentially be devastating even though
the Proanthocyanidins have been proven to be an outstanding arthritic alleviator.
We use as the
calcium derivative Cal Gran which is a natural source of calcium
derived from egg shell (the regular calcium supplements on the market
today are egg shell oyster shell, dolomite (rock), and bone
meal. When used as a regular supplement they have to go through
the digestive tract and they are not assimilative to the human body
and can cause deposits all through the tissues. However, the
process by which the calcium is derived from the eggshell to make the
Cal Gran leaves the calcium in assimilative form, which dissipates
within 24 hours). The Cal Gran bypasses the hydrochloric acid.
